Highway 407 Accident Leads To OPP Telling Drivers To Check Their Tires

As if the snow and ice weren’t enough to contend with, Ontario drivers are now being warned to make sure their tires are correctly fastened. The Ontario Provincial Police cautioned drivers on Tuesday, November 19, 2019, to check that their tires are secured adequately following an incident on Highway 407 in which a delivery truck's wheels flew off and bounced into oncoming traffic.

“The back tires of this truck separated, and they bounced off and ended up in the westbound lanes, apparently the tires were put on two weeks ago,” explained Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP while on scene.

“The wheels bounced off across the 407 eastbound lanes and ended up way in the distance.”

The tires struck a convertible heading westbound, causing the vehicle to veer off into a nearby ditch.

Thankfully, the driver was not seriously injured in the incident. A second vehicle was also hit by the tires and sustained minor damage.

“This is the time of year we see an increase in wheel separation because people are installing their winter tires,” Schmidt added.

“There is potential that the wheels could become loose after installation because of some settling of the proponents after the vehicle has been driven for a few kilometres."

A similar traffic accident led to major shutdowns on Ontario's Highway 400 back in June.

A car tire critically injured a 29-year-old woman after it flew off a moving vehicle and smashed into her windshield.

Similarly, CityNews reported that a man was critically injured back in May after a wheel flew off an SUV and hit a vehicle on Highway 400. He suffered severe injuries to his head and internal organs.
