It's Official: Toronto City Council Approves Tolls For The Gardiner And The DVP

Toronto may soon face yet another transit woe within the next few years -  after 12 hours of debate, the city council voted 32-9 in favour of tolling the Gardiner and the DVP.

The purpose of the tolling is to spawn revenue that will be put towards $33-billion worth of transit and infrastructure initiatives. While the city has voted in approval of the tolls, the provincial government will still have to confirm the decision before any plans can be implemented.

Major John Tory has been under fire since the decision, since he spearheaded the project despite earlier claims that tolls were "not a preferred option" for raising funds for city projects.

Currently, the proposed toll cost is $2 per trip, which would bring in $200 million to the city annually. However, nothing is set in stone yet.
