This past weekend, American retail company J. Crew Group Inc. announced that yet another one of their most prominent J. Crew Canada stores will be closing its doors for good. The J. Crew store in question, located on the third level of the Eaton Centre in downtown Toronto, will be officially closed as of this weekend, on January 6th.
The location was only Toronto's second J. Crew location to open back in 2012 and the first one in the city to carry the men's clothing line. The other location at Yorkdale, which was also the brand's very first Canadian location, only carries women's clothing.
Now though, J. Crew will officially be giving up their coveted retail space, which is over 8000 square feet, at the Eaton Centre - which is not only the busiest mall all of Toronto, but all of North America. It's not the company's first Canadian closure either. In fact, this Toronto departure is the latest in a number of J. Crew closures across the country.
Recently, J. Crew also closed a store at Calgary's Chinook Centre, another in the West Edmonton Mall, and two more locations in the GTA, one at Fairview and another at Markville. While the brand still operates a number of J. Crew locations and even outlet stores across the country, the Toronto closure will be the 5th in Canada.
All these recent closures are now prompting Canadians to wonder if the brand is going to abandon Canada altogether.
Reports from Retail Insidersuggest that like many other American brands, their Canadian expansion hasn't been very successful, possibly due to their higher prices north of the border.
Other reports also reveal the J. Crew even cancelled their contract with a PR firm for the Canadian brand, indicating that they aren't planning on a future in the Canadian market.
As for the store closing at Toronto, this weekend is your last chance to get J. Crew stuff from the Eaton Centre and according to some recent shoppers, there are some amazing deals going on right now.
On a recent Red Flag Deals forum one shopper revealed that because of the impending store closure, everything is 70% off the lowest ticketed price. Another confirmed that they were able to get five suits for only $300 total. This late into the week though, their selection is going to be dwindling.
The Eaton Centre J. Crew will officially be closed after Sunday, January 6th. It's not confirmed yet what will be taking its coveted spot in the mall, but Retail Insider suggests Canada Goose is eyeing the location.
