For those people eagerly waiting to see comedian John Mulaney's Toronto show, the last few months have probably felt unnervingly like purgatory. First, the Saturday Night Live alumnus' Just For Laughs Festival spot in September was pushed back. Then, the 6ix weather got in the way. Now, it's Lorne Michaels' fault, not that Mulaney would dare blame his former boss.

Mulaney posted on his social media on Thursday, February 6, to regretfully announce he has had to rearrange his performance yet again. That makes three postponements so far.

The show, most recently slated for February 28, has been pushed back as Mulaney, stand-up veteran and creator and star of Netflix's Sack Lunch Bunch, has been tapped to host SNL for a third time.

Original ticket-holders may feel they have the right to be pissed. Three postponements is admittedly a bit much.

But the way in which Mulaney announced the latest rescheduling was at least pretty creative.

Alongside a photo of 75-year-old Canadian exec's note, Mulaney wrote: "A letter from Lorne Michaels to the people of Toronto. I am terribly sorry to move the show again. It is now rescheduled for April 10. I will be there no matter what. I love you Toronto. Also, I’m afraid of Lorne so I do what he says."

Beginning his letter with "my fellow Canadians," Michaels, who is often credited with carrying a fearsome reputation, writes: "I think considering the state of affairs that this country is in, the need for John is greater in New York right now.

"John was fully prepared for Toronto and feels deep regret to have to postpone for a third time, but he was drafted by SNL. Yes, we still have the draft here.

"He is simply doing his duty, and there is nothing more Canadian than that. My apologies."

As might be imagined after three instances and six months of delays, Mulaney's fans in Toronto weren't particularly thrilled with the news. Let us tell you, there was a lot of negative social reaction in the immediate aftermath of the announcement.

Others, though, just couldn't get over how much Michaels' note (and Mulaney's sheepish sharing of it) reminded them of getting hold of that elusive doctor's note to skip gym class back in the day.

"I like that Mulaney has to get what's essentially a doctor's note from Lorne so he could reschedule his Toronto show again," reads one tweet.

Mulaney's show at Meridian Hall is now set for April 10, nearly seven months after his initial show was scheduled as part of the annual JFL bonanza in the city.

That date is Good Friday, so fans will likely be hoping Mulaney doesn't take the Easter celebrations that come with that day too seriously, for fear of missing out again.

After all, five dates for one show would surely be enough to turn any Canadian impolite, whatever the next note from Lorne might say.

To quote that notorious Mulaney meme: "It's upsetting!"
