76 Staff At 2 Major Mississauga Hospitals Have Now Tested Positive For COVID-19

Peel Region continues to suffer.
Mississauga Hospital Workers Are Contracting COVID-19 With 76 Confirmed THP Cases

Peel Region continues to be hit hard by COVID-19. Mississauga hospital workers are increasingly testing positive for the virus in recent weeks, and a recent spike has resulted in 76 members of staff across two hospitals contracting the illness. The affected employees work at Mississauga Hospital and Credit Valley Hospital.

An update given on Friday, April 17 by the two hospitals' parent healthcare system Trillium Health Partners (THP) revealed the extent of the cases on the sites.

As of Wednesday morning, April 15, 76 staff have COVID-19.

The affected sites, per Mississauga.com, are Credit Valley Hospital and Mississauga Hospital.

THP's third site, Queensway Health Centre, is largely closed to the public right now in order to operate as critical care space during the pandemic.

In particular, outbreaks were declared at Unit 1D Rehab and Unit 2D Mental Health at Credit Valley Hospital on March 31 and April 12, respectively.

Back on March 30, Credit Valley Hospital announced that four patients on one small unit had all tested positive for COVID-19. It is unclear whether this is the same unit affected by the confirmed outbreak the following day.

The outbreak at Unit 1D Rehab was declared over on Tuesday, April 14.

Meanwhile, Mississauga Hospital has seen Unit 4B Medicine and Unit 3A Medicine affected.

Those outbreaks were announced in the space of three days between April 9 and April 11.

The first of those, on April 9, saw seven staff members confirmed to have contracted the virus.

Narcity has reached out to THP for more information.

A statement from a THP spokesperson stresses that the staff members contracted the virus through a variety of sources including community spread.

It emphasizes that the number of THP healthcare workers who have actually been affected by COVID-19 outbreaks on site at THP is much lower.

Per Peel Region's specific COVID-19 tracking page, the region has confirmed 1274 cases of the virus, and has suffered 32 deaths.

Overnight between Tuesday and Wednesday this week, Peel reported its largest single-day increase in cases, per Mississauga.com.

Last week, a Brampton Civic Hospital employee was Ontario's first confirmed death of a healthcare worker due to the virus.
