Peel Regional Police has revealed that Roopesh Rajkumar, father of the 11-year-old girl, Riya Rajkumar who was found dead in a basement apartment in Brampton on Thursday night, is still in the hospital. After his arrest on Thursday, the police took Rajkumar to the hospital where he was later transferred to a trauma center when his condition was deemed serve enough. Now, Peel Police confirm that Roopesh Rajkumar is still hospitalized due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Rajkumar was arrested shortly after his daughter's body was found in a basement apartment in Brampton. He was arrested by OPP officers near the Orillia area in a high-risk takedown after someone had located his vehicle after the Amber Alert was issued.
The Amber Alert was issued around 11:00 P.M. after Peel Police had been investigating the missing case since around 7:00 P.M. when Riya's mother made police aware of threats that were reportedly given to her that Rajkumar was going to harm himself and their daughter.
However, this means that the police were outside of the house where they would later find Riya's body for hours before forcing entry.
In an updated news release that was released by Peel Police Sunday afternoon, they make it clear that Roopesh Rajkumar is in the hospital due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Due to these injuries, the SIU has determined that they will not be invoking their mandate.
Rajkumar has remained in the custody of the Ontario Correctional Services since he has been arrested on Thursday.
The court appearance for Rajkumar is still pending and will not be set until he is medically cleared to attend.
