Simu Liu Was Called "Too Ugly For Chinese People" By A YouTuber And His Response Was Perfect

If you were to ask Canadians if they thought Simu Liu was “too ugly” to be Marvel’s next superhero, they would probably call you crazy. However, the same can't be said for some Chinese fans. YouTube personality Asian Boss revealed what fans in China apparently think about Liu landing the lead role. 

Asian Boss posted a video entitled “Is The Asian Lead For Marvel 'Too Ugly' For Chinese People?” on Thursday. In the video, the host of the series claims that Liu and his co-star Awkwafina are considered "very ugly," according to local Chinese social media. The video then cuts to several street interview clips of people examining a photo of Liu and commenting on his appearance.

Most of the interviewees featured in the video are surprisingly critical of Liu’s appearance bashing the actor for being “average.”

“He’s just about average. I don’t think he’s considered handsome by Chinese standards,” one woman said.

Others seemed upset by the fact that Hollywood selected Liu and that he represents North American standards for physical attractiveness more so than Chinese.

“If this were a Chinese superhero movie, he probably wouldn’t have gotten the role,” said another interviewee. “But he got cast in Hollywood, so his looks must fit the Americans’ view on what Chinese men should look like. It’s probably because he has single eyelids and because he has a flat nose.”

Liu, as always, remained a gentleman and took the criticism in stride. The actor decided to use the video’s harsh message as a teachable moment to anyone willing to chase their dreams:

“I’ve had people question me my entire life. A lot of teachers thought I’d never amount to anything, a lot of producers, directors, writers AND co-stars have questioned my acting ability, and I’ve been rejected from countless conservatories, grants, programs, etc. I’ve been second-guessed at every single possible step of my career,” Liu said in a Facebook post on Friday.

“The reason why I’m still standing is because I’m singularly focused, I have the utmost belief in my abilities, and I refuse to let the opinions of others define me. In your careers, in your lives, no matter where you go, you will always encounter voices of doubt. Some will come from people who are frighteningly close to you. Are you going to let those voices own you?”

Fans have flooded the comments in support of Liu. "I'm deeply touched by your post. It resonates deeply within," wrote one commenter. "Wow I needed to hear this. What an amazingly graceful way of handling such a nasty video," said another.

Liu is set to star in Marvel’s "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" which hits theatres on Feb. 12, 2021.
