Special Investigation Unit Involved After Woman Falls To Her Death From A Toronto Balcony

A family is grieving after a 29-year-old woman fell from her balcony in the area of High Park on Wednesday night during a Toronto Police call. Since her death, the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) has announced that it is now investigating the incident. How the woman managed to fall from her balcony is still unclear.

Toronto Police were called to the apartment about a domestic incident, according to the SIU press release.

It says that "at approximately 5:15 p.m. on May 27, 2020, Toronto Police Service officers responded to an apartment building on High Park Avenue, in the area of Glenlake Avenue, for a domestic incident."Officers entered the unit on the 24th floor, where they observed a woman on her balcony, the report states. "A short time later, the woman fell from the balcony to the ground below."

While there is currently no video evidence of the incident, in an Instagram post the family is alleging that the woman was pushed off of the balcony.

The SIU has stated that they are "aware of allegations made by certain family members of the deceased and will be looking to speak to anyone with information about these allegations."*

They are urging anybody who may have video evidence to come forward about the matter. Currently, two forensics examiners and two investigators have been assigned to the case.

Any video evidence that residents may possess can be submitted through the SIU website.

While information has yet to be released on exactly why the unit is investigating, their website states that when a death occurs, they "consider whether an officer has committed a criminal offence  in connection with the incident under investigation."

However, this isn't the first time that the Toronto Police have been investigated by the SIU.

Back in April, they also confirmed that they were looking into an incident after video footage appeared online that appeared to show a suspect being hit by a police cruiser during a chase.
