Environment Canada issued a special weather warning just after 1:30 PM on Thursday, stating that Toronto and parts of the GTA should expect thunderstorms and around 15 to 25 mm of rain this evening. Temperatures in the city are also supposed to reach a high of 10°C this afternoon.
The Toronto and Region Conversation Authority and Credit Valley Conservation have also issued separate warnings due to the wet and mild conditions. Flood warnings have been issued for parts of the GTA that will remain in effect until tomorrow morning.
"Several rounds of showers will move through the area this afternoon and this evening bringing general rainfall amounts of 10 mm. However embedded isolated thunderstorms may boost local rainfall totals into the 15 to 25 mm range by late this evening," reads Environment Canada's statement.
“Toronto and Region Conservation advises Environment Canada has forecasted 10-20mm of rainfall beginning Thursday around noon and tapering off early Friday morning. There is also a slight chance of thunderstorms during Thursday evening which could bring an additional 10-30mm of rainfall over a short duration,” read the TRCA statement obtained by CP24.
“In addition to the rain, temperatures are expected to remain above zero today until overnight Friday, resulting in additional runoff from melting snow. Many of TRCA’s rivers and streams have full ice cover. The rise in water levels from rainfall and snowmelt could result in a break-up of the ice,” the statement continued.
“All rivers within the GTA may experience higher flows and water levels, resulting in potential flooding and hazardous conditions,” the TRCA continued.
The organization is concerned about localized flooding due and possible ice jams near the bridge piers this Thursday. “Ponding may occur in low-lying areas. The combination of slippery and unstable banks could create hazardous conditions close to any river, stream or other water body. All shorelines, rivers and streams within the GTA should be considered hazardous.”
Torontonians planning to brave the weather this evening should dress appropriately, boots, umbrellas, and raincoats are all going to come in handy when facing the expected downpour.
