The Canadian Arctic is often overlooked as a travel destination because of the prevailing misconception that it's all just ice and snow. In reality, there's so much more to it than just that - breathtaking landscapes, interesting creatures and magical sights like the Aurora Borealis make it a worthwhile place to visit.
Those looking for an adventure of a lifetime should consider going on an Arctic Safari. Adventure Canada, an travel company, is offering an expedition to the Arctic lands this year, from July 30 to August 10, 2017. The safari takes form as a cruise that will take you through the gorgeous fjords of Greenland to the spectacular islands of Nunavut.
A flight from Toronto with land you in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland where you will board the majestic Ocean Endeavour. In the first five days, the vessel will take you to Greenland's most beautiful fjords and communities, including Sondre Stromfjord, Sisimiut, Ilulissat, Uummannaq, and Karrat. You'll see a variety of wildlife, from seals, marine birds, whales and other mammals along the way. The sixth day will be spent at sea en route to Pond Inlet in Canada, which is a prime location for viewing narwhals. The latter half of the trip will then be spent exploring key sites in Nunavut, including North Baffin, Devon Island, Lancaster Sound, the Beechey Islands, and Resolute ("the place with no dawn").
Different packages for the Arctic Safari are offered, starting from $5,995. Although the cruise is on the pricey end, you definitely get your money's worth as it includes lodging on the vessel, meals and snacks, interactive workshops, entertainment, admissions to museums and tours that are visited throughout the trip.
