Outdoor enthusiasts who seek the full Bruce Peninsula experience should definitely explore the northern sections of the Bruce Trail - an 840-km route that represents Canada's longest marked hiking trail. Over 400,000 visits are made year round for snowshoeing, wildlife watching and photography along the trail.

The Peninsula section makes up approximately 170 km of the main trail and follows the edge of Bruce Peninsula National Park, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. It's a bit of a challenging hike that consists of rugged footpaths and uneven ground, but it's totally worth it for the unmatched views of the Georgian Bay.

Notable sites along the the way are Indian Head Cove and the Grotto. Both are undeniably the highlights of the Bruce Peninsula, and can both be reached along the Bruce Trail.

There are a few hazards hikers should be aware of while embarking on this this trail - the area which it cuts through is black bear and massasauga rattlesnake territory, so it's important to stay vigilant while making the journey.

It's also critical that hikers stay on the marked path to avoid any unexpected cliffs and crevasses.

Those looking for a more direct route to Indian Head Cove and the Grotto can take the alternate Georgian Bay Trail, which is the most direct route to the shoreline. It takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, beginning at the Cyprus Lake area.

The beginning of the trail comprises of crushed gravel paths and some hills, making it the easier portion. Nearer to the shoreline, there are slippery cliffs and higher elevations, so it's important to take some caution in that section.
