We all know that when it comes to waste, less is best for the environment. This Toronto restaurant is leading the way for minimizing their restaurant waste. Their policy is not new nor is the restaurant but they're paving the way for a greener future.
Maizal is known for their spectacular Mexican food but they're making a name for themselves as the first zero waste restaurant in Toronto. Living in such a wasteful society (plastic people, need we say more?), it's cool to see an amazing restaurant taking a step in the environmental direction.
Once a week the co-owner of Maizal, Ivan Wadgymar, will drive out the leftover food waste to Cavaleiro Farms in Schomberg and pick up fresh produce instead. Wadgymar thinks that it's important to close the waste gap when it comes to restaurant leftovers. Maizal's leftovers get fed to animals on site, as is or turned into compost.
So far the response to their eco-friendly choice has been overwhelmingly positive, with others even joining Wadgymar on his trips to the farm. Who doesn't love knowing that we're helping the environment by not wasting precious (and delicious) food?
