Forbes released their annual The World's Billionaires list today on Tuesday, March 5. It ranks the richest people in the world based on their documented net worth. The rankings have been released every year since March 1987.
David Thomson and his family came out on top for Canadian billionaires. The reason for their wealth? The family is from Toronto and came to their wealth through media, according to Forbes.
"David Thomson and his family control a media and publishing empire founded by his grandfather Roy Thomson," writes Forbes in their profile of the family. "The family's biggest holding: more than 350 million shares of Thomson Reuters, where Thomson serves as chairman." Thomson Reuters is a Canadian mass media company that is based in Toronto.
According to Forbes, Canadian media company Thomson Reuters also sold a controlling stake in Refinitiv last year, which gained the company another $17 billion dollars.
"The family also holds a stake in telecom giant Bell Canada and own the Toronto-based The Globe and Mail newspaper," writes Forbes in their profile of David Thomson.
The Thomson family were ranked the 27th richest in the world on Forbes' list. The second richest Canadian didn't even come close – Joseph Tsai was ranked #147 on the list with a net worth of $10.2 billion dollars. He is the vice chairman and co-founder of Alibaba Group and also owns nearly half of the NBA franchise, Brooklyn Nets.
Other Canadians that made the billionaires list included Lululemon founder Chip Wilson, BC billionaire Jim Pattison, and Galen Weston and his family, who owns Loblaws, Shoppers Drug Mart, Holt Renfrew and more.
As for the richest person in the whole world? That would be Amazon founder Jeff Besos and his family. He has a net worth of $131 billion dollars and Amazon had over $230 billion dollars in revenue in 2018, Forbes reports.
