Torontonians flooded social media this morning to gush over the Toronto’s Zoo new baby Zebra after his birth was announced to the public. The young Grevy zebra, a species which is currently considered endangered, was born two weeks ago and is good health, according to the update given by zoo officials this Tuesday.

The baby zebra will be viewable to the public sometime this spring. In the meantime, Torontonians have been given the exciting responsibility of naming the little guy with the voting taking place on the zoo’s Facebook page.

There are four options for people to select from: JJ (which stands for Jake Jr. after the zebra’s father Jake), TJ (which represents both his mother, Tori, and his father), Chewy (a reference to Star Wars an ongoing theme with  the zoo's zebras) and Obi (a second Star Wars option.)

Torontonians took to social media to express their excitement over the birth of the animal as well as there plans to visit him in the springtime.

Cute 🦓 alert. Tori, our eight-year-old Grevy’s zebra, gave birth to a male foal in the early morning hours on Tuesday February 13th. Both mom and foal are doing well and are both currently in the indoor zebra habitat which is not viewable to the public at this time. #BabyStripes pic.twitter.com/lcrSiZ0HN7

The winning name will be selected and announced on March 12th, and by the looks of the comments on the zoo's Facebook page, it’s going to be a continuation of the Star Wars theme.

The unnamed baby zebra is the third from parents Tori and Jake who gave birth to Leia in 2014 and Rey in 2016. The new addition is significant to the animal's sadly dwindling species. The International Union for Conversation of Nature has estimated that there are only 2,800 Grevy Zebra's left on the planet.

Anyone who wants to get in on the naming action should head over to the Toronto’s Zoo’s Facebook page and cast your vote. It is unclear at this time when exactly in spring the public will be able to visit the zoo's latest member.
