Huge Group Of Toronto Teens Commit Mass TTC Fare Evasion And Get Away With It (VIDEO)

Fare evasion is a growing problem in Toronto. The TTC lost an estimated $61 million last year to unpaid fares, and with numbers like that, it’s a wonder that commuters aren’t already paying more to get around. Torontonians avoid paying their fares because it appears to be pretty easy. A lack of transit security has left a vast grey area for those who don’t feel like paying for their travel to get away with it.

In a new video blowing up on Toronto's Reddit feed, a group of teens can be seen giggling as they rip through the gates of a subway station. In the brief clip, a young man is seen tapping his PRESTO card to open the gate which leads to the station's platform before yelling out “Morning!” As 8 or more teenage males fall in behind him and proceed to enter onto the platform for free with ease.

The video is an example of the failing fare exchange system. The plastic gates located at nearly every subway station in the city set in place to prevent people from entering without paying can easily be slipped through. A tactic commonly used by fare evaders.

Toronto’s Auditor General released a video on February 21st that outlined some of the many tactics used by fare evaders which included tailgating, squeezing through the gates, using a bag to activate the gates sensor and even using well-trained dogs to help open the gate. Take a look at the Auditor General's video below:

The TTC approved a fare hike of 10 cents back in January of this year; the fare increase will be used to offset the transit’s system losses. Those complaining about the hikes should try to keep in mind that if everyone in the city just paid their fares, the prices to take transit would be much lower.
