John Tory wants you to work from home all through the summer. The mayor expressed his wish for employees to work remotely until September, if possible. Tory, along with several schools and employers, says remote work and study will help ease congestion on transit as Toronto's reopening begins.
"The City of Toronto and a number of the city's major downtown employers... as well as Toronto's post-secondary institutions, will continue to support a majority of employees, where possible, continuing to work from home until September at the earliest," said Tory at Toronto staff's daily briefing on Friday, May 27.
A release on the City website lists the employers, universities, and colleges that have already committed to keeping staff and students at home through the summer.
Businesses that have committed to this so far include banks like TD Bank and Scotiabank, as well as other major employers such as Rogers Communications, Deloitte, and Sun Life Financial.
Post-secondary schools like Ryerson University, Humber College, and George Brown College have also agreed, notes the City statement.
Tory noted in his briefing that a major reason for this plan is to prevent an impossible situation where thousands upon thousands of people return to taking transit at the same time.
According to data in the City release, finance and insurance employees account for approximately 12% of all public transit commuters in the 6ix, and more than 57,000 use it regularly for their commute.
Meanwhile, over half of Toronto-educated post-secondary students also commute by transit.
"Right now, we're seeing an 80% drop (in ridership)," said Tory. "Such an approach will help take the pressure off our subway system in the downtown and help ensure that we have a slower, steady, safe restart."

Soon after the news was announced, Toronto Public Health tweeted an advisory about how to make the best of working from home for the foreseeable future.
It sounds like it's time to become familiar with it.
For employees at those sorts of stores, working from home may not necessarily be an option. It remains to be seen whether workers at Toronto locations would get different treatment than those in other areas of Ontario.
