The TTC has announced many changes that will modernize the way you commute – or at least, the way you pay to commute.

Their plan is to get rid of ticket collectors by the end of 2016 and eliminate tokens and tickets all together by mid-2017. In their place will be the Metrolinx initiative: Presto cards, whose presence has been creeping up on us for quite some time as they are already a part of the daily grind for GO Transit users. The TTC announced plans to be in 26 stations by next month and in every streetcar by the end of 2015.

While Presto cards will be the main replacement for tokens and tickets, people will also be able to use their debit and credit cards to pay for their trips. Cue a sigh of relief from everyone who doesn’t carry cash or change.

The TTC turnstiles will also be getting a makeover. TTC spokesman Brad Ross said, “They’re more like the gates that you see in European cities”. Many more changes are to come and Ross admits that some are overdue, "It's been a long time coming."

We agree, Brad. We agree.
