The weather has been an absolute mess today. Since this morning, snow, ice rain, and extreme winds have plagued the city causing awful road conditions and very low visibility. While a majority of schools and transportation closed down during today's storm, the University of Toronto Downtown Campus remained open and students were fearing for their safety while travelling to school.
The University of Toronto Mississauga and Scarborough both announced that they would be closing down their campuses for the day at around 6:45 A.M. due to the treacherous conditions. George Brown, Ryerson and even OCAD (which is minutes away from the St. George campus) all closed their doors as well.
The morning has been a mess of TTC delays, shuttle bus cancellations and poor road conditions, which is why when the Univerity of Toronto announced that their St. George campus would remain open this morning, many students began to panic.
A majority of students took to Twitter to express their concerns about the unsafe conditions outside. Since a high percentage of St. George students and staff are commuters, getting to school can become a challenge in these conditions. Students were afraid that their commutes could become unsafe while attempting to get to their morning classes.
ALL CAMPUS WEATHER UPDATEAs of 6:45am on Feb. 12:* UTM is closed* UTSC is closed* Downtown Toronto campus is open.We are continuing to monitor the weather and will update as necessary.https://t.co/UNxPiHJnXh
With some students commuting over an hour or twoto get to school, many were worried that these commutes would become impossible to complete, especially when they have to return home in the evening after the conditions have worsened.
A lot of students were not only worried about how unsafe the commute would be but also the conditions within the campus. Some students complained of unshovelled sidewalks, slippery conditions and strong winds that made the conditions outside dangerous to navigate.
please stop trying to murder commuters
This exact scenario happened last week, every campus was closed, and only UTSG remained open until they FINALLY decided to close after 3pm. Complete disregard for safety of students, and not only that, other schools reported closure at 5:30 AM, while you guys waited until 7 AM..
are you serious!!!!! St George Students are the only students in the city who will be forced to go out in these conditions! This is despicable behaviour, we too are commuters and travel long ways which are dangerous in this weather!
CLOSE THE CAMPUS BEFORE I DIE ON MY COMMUTE
This is giving me major anxiety. I commute from far...at least I deserve a better ‘weather forecasting’ from a place like University of Toronto..!!!
Every other school: We care about our students safetyUofTSG: Have fun risking your life on your way to campus
I have a friend who recently slipped on ice on campus and broke her ankle, and has to be in a cast and use crutches for eight weeks. How is she supposed to get to her classes and midterms when all the paths are covered in snow?
Good job, you’re about to put thousands of students’ lives in danger.
Since this morning, the University has announced that the campus will now be closing at 4 PM, but this has not made the students any happier. Many students worry that the commutes up until 4 PM will be just as dangerous and messy as afterward.
Y’all say “due to worsening conditions” as if it was all sunny and clear this morning lmao
Seems like every other school in the GTA knew about these worsening conditions before 12pm, just saying...
Okay but the logic behind this is so flawed. People would have already made a dangerous commute downtown, and will then have to make a dangerous commute home, if they have any classes before 4pm. Can we please just put the safety of students first? That would be SO nice.
Stay safe Torontonians!
