U of T is known for taking the number one spot on several rankings. It's one of Canada's most prestigious and globally recognized postsecondary schools. Now, it has taken the top spot on another ranking, but this one isn't even remotely related to academics. The University of Toronto was ranked the number one school for sugar baby arrangements in Canada.
SeekingArrangement is a website that coordinates sugar baby and sugar daddy relationships. They describe themselves as "the leading Sugar Daddy dating site where over 10 million members fuel mutually beneficial relationships on their terms".
According to a recent study by the company that they published on their website, U of T has the highest number of students who are also sugar babies as well as students at the university.
U of T took the first place spot out twenty Canadian universities. Two other Ontario universities took the second and third spot – York University and the University of Waterloo, respectively. Another Ontario university, Carleton, made the top five list. It looks like Ontario is the province with the most sugar baby students in Canada.
According to SeekingArrangement, the number of university students across Canada hoping to be sugar babies has significantly increased in the past year. "The number of university students in the Canada seeking Sugar Daddies and Sugar Mommies rose 44 percent from the previous year," says the website.
So how much do these students make from their sugar baby arrangements? "On average, students receive a monthly allowance of $2,925 among other benefits, including networking opportunities and career or business advantages," reads the report.
One of the reasons for a growing amount of university students doubling as sugar babies? The website cites increasing tuition costs. "As the cost of pursuing an education increases, so do the number of college Sugar Babies," the company says.
SeekingArrangement CEO Brandon Wade told The Vancouver Sun that one of the reasons for the growing popularity of becoming a sugar baby alongside pursuing your university studies is a 40 percent increase in university tuition in Canada over the past years.
"Students should not be overwhelmed with the thought of drowning in debt upon graduation," he said. "Obtaining a great job, experiencing life and preparing for a bright future should be a university graduate’s main focus."
