The Toronto Raptors’ journey to becoming NBA champions is a true underdog story, which is why they were the perfect team for Fred VanVleet. VanVleet famously went undrafted back in 2016 after turning down two offers to play in the NBA’s Development League. VanVleet later signed on to play in the 2016 NBA Summer League with the Raptors, eventually signing a multi-year deal with the team. The rest, of course, is history.
Since becoming a Raptor, VanVleet has stolen fans' hearts and is considered an essential part of the team's roster. The player has stayed busy in Toronto during the offseason, throwing parties and giving back to Toronto's public schools.
Guess who surprised @ChalkfarmPSTDSB today? Thank you @FredVanVleet for making everyone’s day! 🏀 #WeTheNorth https://t.co/bIVVUizwwt— Toronto District School Board (@Toronto District School Board) 1568142492.0
VanVleet recently revealed just how much Toronto and Canada mean to him in an interview with Elle Canada.
“It’s really adopted me and my family and embraced us with open arms. I think people here relate to me and my story. It’s been an unbelievable experience to live here, going on year four now, and it’s going by fast," he said to Elle.
"We love it here. My kids love it. My daughter is a dual citizen. I definitely could see myself living here for a long, long time. Canada is really like a second home for us. This has grown into a place that we love to be.”
The player also talked about what he and his family like to do in the city during his time off. "We go to the aquarium a lot. My daughter loves it. I think my girlfriend loves it more than all of us. We used to live on Queens Quay, so we’d go right there all the time. We like to enjoy ourselves and the weather, when it’s good. Other than that, we watch Netflix and hang out like a regular family."
Here's hoping that VanVleet stays in the 6ix for years to come and that he brings home a few more championships while he is at it!
