York Regional Police Officer Attacked By Suspect Now Charged With Attempted Murder

Being a cop is never easy, even when most people are staying inside. A York Regional Police officer was attacked in the empty lot of the Hillcrest Mall. The suspect was arrested and is facing serious charges.

In a March 28 news release, the YRP stated that they had arrested 22-year-old Chidubem Anthony Okeke for the assault on an officer that occurred on March 27, at around 3:40 p.m.

He is being charged with attempted murder and failure to comply with recognizance.

The officer was sitting in his car when the attack began. The suspect approached the cruiser and allegedly began the attack after the officer rolled down the window.

The officer got out of his vehicle, and Okeke allegedly continued to assault him, eventually grabbing the officer's baton and using it against him.

More officers arrived on the scene and placed Okeke under arrest. The attacked officer, a member of the force for four years, was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Videos of the attack and the police response were shared on Twitter. A post from user @uberiiii included a video shot by someone else that shows Okeke wearing a white suit and coming in close contact with the officer.

A second video shot by Twitter user @Savage_Ange1 shows a number of police vehicles quickly responding to the situation with their sirens on full blast.

Officers have requested that any video taken of the altercation be shared with them. They are also looking for any possible dashcam footage of the suspect prior to the attack.

The Hillcrest Mall parking lot was almost entirely empty at the time of the incident.

Okeke is scheduled to appear in court on March 28. The York Regional Police are also requesting any additional information be provided directly to them or through Crimestoppers.
