Allegany State Park is located in Salamanca, NY which is about a 3 hour drive from Toronto, a 6 hour drive from Ottawa, a 5 hour drive from Kingston and a 3.5 hour drive from London. It's definitely not a super far trek but it would be worth it to spend the weekend at a cute Bed&Breakfast in town.
Synchronous fireflies travel from Georgia up to New York to mate every summer. It's always hard to tell exactly when they'll arrive because the timing always varies but it's usually around late June to mid-July!
If you're looking to view the fireflies in action the best time to go see them is anywhere from 10pm-2am when the night is completely dark and you can fully appreciate their unique flash patterns!
The Environmental Education Department offers hikes every season through the park to see the rare and beautiful fireflies. While they haven't yet released their dates for the 2018 season you should definitely keep an eye on their website for updates!
