The Thousand Islands is one of Canada's most treasured places. It is an archipelago consisting of 1,864 breathtaking islands that straddle the Canada-US border in the St. Lawrence River. Of those many islands, one stands out as a must-see destination for all tourists and travellers.
Heart Island is located on the US side of the border, by Alexandria Bay in the state of New York. It is one of the most visited islands in the area, with several points of interest to explore, including the historic Boldt Castle.
Boldt Castle was an endeavour taken on by George C. Boldt, the millionaire possessor of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel). He wanted to build a grand German-inspired castle on Heart Island as an homage to his wife Louise. A total of 300 workers were staffed to create a structure that was six stories tall and 120 rooms deep.
When his wife suddenly died in 1904, construction was stopped immediately and the castle was left unfinished. Boldt never returned to the island, but the castle still remained there as a reminder of his undying love.
Today, the castle is under ownership of the Thousand Islands Bridge authority who are working to restore and preserve the historic site. Proceeds from admission ticket sales (which are $9.50 USD per person) go towards those efforts. Visitors can explore the island's picturesque hiking trails, go on tours of the castle and stroll through the gorgeous courtyards on site.
There are several boat tours that can take you on a day trip to Heart Island. Read the following article for more information:
