Toyota Canada Recalls Impact More Than 400,000 Cars Because Of Airbag Problems

A major car manufacturer is warning drivers that something that is supposed to keep you safe while driving might not be working the way it is meant to. A new Toyota Canada recall impacts more than 400,000 cars sold across the country because of problems with the airbags. Six different models of Toyotas ranging from 1998 to 2019 are part of the recall.

On January 21, the company announced two different recalls that had to do with problems with the airbags in certain models dating back to 1998.

A combined total of over 400,000 vehicles are affected across Canada and there's a serious risk to the safety of people in those vehicles.

The 1998-2000 Toyota RAV4, 1997-1999 Celica and 1998-1999 Paseo vehicles have a part that would prevent the airbag from deploying properly.

Approximately 17,022 cars are part of that warning.

"If an abnormal deployment or inflator rupture occurs, this could increase the risk of injury to vehicle occupants," the manufacturer said in a news release.

The 2011 to 2019 Corolla, 2011 to 2014 Matrix and 2012 to 2018 Avalon cars are part of another recall.

About 407,318 cars have an electronic control unit that could lead to airbags and seat belt pretensioners (what makes your seat belt lock in place during an accident) not being deployed

Not having both of those things can increase the risk and severity of injury for people.

For the 17,022 cars involved in the first recall, the company is investigating how to fix the issue and will notify owners through the mail by late March.

As for the models involved in the second recall, in most cases, Toyota dealers will install a part to fix the issue and it won't cost a thing.

These owners will also be notified by mail by mid-March.

According to CBC, these Toyota recalls affect around 3.4 million vehicles worldwide.

For both recalls, you can check your vehicle online here by entering the vehicle identification number.
