12 Surreal Places In Alberta You Won't Believe Really Exist
You're gonna wanna see these.
Although the weather in Alberta over the past few weeks has been more than disappointing, it's about to warm up again super quickly so you know what means - it's road trip season!!!
No matter if you live in a small town or the big city, there's no shortage of fun destinations that are less than a few short hours away from you for you to check out. In fact, Alberta even has some amazing hidden secrets. Here are a few of our favourite surreal places that Alberta has to offer:
You may not be able to actually transport back in time, but a quick trip to Jurrasic Forest might just make you feel like you have. Located just a 40-minute drive from the city fo Edmonton, this awesome park makes for the perfect summer day trip, and the most Instagrammable experience, of course.
A lot of Albertans love summer not only for the warm weather but also because it's prime time to lace up your hiking shoes and head to the Rocky Mountains. There's an endless amount of trails to explore here, but one that has an absolutely stunning view at the end is Little Lougheed in Spray Valley Provincial Park.
The beautiful Red Rock Canyon is located in Water National Park and is a great place for beginners to get a hike in while the sun is out and shining. If hiking isn't your thing, taking a drive through the Canyon provides all the same views with a lot more air conditioning.
If you find yourself in Jasper National Park and are in need of a new and exciting hike to try, we highly recommend Athabasca Falls. The beautiful falls you'll catch a glimpse of may not be the highest or the wildest found in the Rocky Mountains, but they are the strongest, which is pretty impressive.
Even if you're not a student at the University of Alberta, the nearby Botanic Gardens are always worth a visit. During the winter time the area is usually lit with beautiful candles and season decoration, but during the spring and summer is when the gardens really thrive - everything is bright and in bloom, making it the perfect place for a picnic lunch or a relaxing stroll.
Many of us Southern Albertans paid a visit to Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump in elementary or middle school, but if you've lived here for a while and still haven't made the trip you'll have to add it to your bucket list ASAP. There are plenty of beautiful landscapes, exhibits, and programming that provides you with knowledge on the Plains Buffalo culture.
If you've driven through the town of Okotoks at any point in your life, odds are good you may have noticed a giant rock at one point or another. The rock weights roughly 16,500 tonnes and landed where it is today during a massive rockslide between 10,000 to 30,000 years ago. Not only can you admire this piece of history, but you can also enjoy a nice picnic lunch around it.
If taking the scenic route while driving is your cup of tea, the Highwood Pass will be your new favourite route in Alberta; it's even known as one of the best drives in Canada! If you live in Canmore, Banff, or Calgary it makes for the perfect day trip, and no matter what direction you drive in, the views are incredible.
Another hike that you absolutely need to experience in Jasper is Maligne Canyon - it's even considered one of the most interesting canyons found in the Canadian Rockies. The hike takes roughly 1-2 hours, depending on how long you take to enjoy the view (you'll want plenty of time to take pictures, trust us).
What better way to show off your excitement for summer than heading to a waterfall and documenting it for the 'gram? The hike to get to the amazing view is incredibly easy, so no worries if you're new to the hiking game!
Personally, sunflowers are my favourite of all time so I can't think of any reason why I wouldn't want to be at the Bowden SunMaze this summer! It opens to the public in August, and it's easily one of the best places to get yourself feeling those fun summer vibes.
If you want to see a world where art and nature collide, Edmonton's Muttart Conservatory is the place to be. Not only will make you feel like you're soaking up the great outdoors, but you'll also get to enjoy the luxury of shade and no bugs.
