Looking for new ways to stay cool in the summer? Skip the public pool and get out into the woods instead! Horseshoe Lake in Jasper is one of the best places in the province to go on a hot summer day for a cool dip. It's a U-shaped lake with crystal clear glacier water that looks just like turquoise. For the most unreal experience, visit early in the morning when the lake is super still and looks like glass.
The hiking trail that brings you to this hidden lake is only 1.5 km long and will take you along the edge of the cliffs surrounding the lake. You'll get some spectacular views on this trail but be careful walking too close to the edge of the cliff.
One of the best parts of this summer adventure is that it's totally free. It's the perfect summer road trip destination and you won't be sorry you came all the way. The water here is so incredibly clear (and cold, just FYI) that you can actually see the trout swimming in the lake along the edges!
You can find Horseshoe Lake in Jasper National Park. It's a four-hour drive from Edmonton and a five-hour drive from Calgary. It's just 30 KM from Jasper so if you've been planning a trip to Jasper this summer then you have to add this to your itinerary!
To find out more about Horseshoe Lake, you can visit Jasper National Park's website. Cliff jumping is not safe and we don't recommend it. Don't want to head to Jasper? Check out this secret summer swimming hole with a waterfall instead!
We strongly advise that before you go swimming or visit any location, you check the most recent updates on potential hazards, security, water quality, and closures. If you do plan to visit a location, respect the environment.
