Sometimes Michigan's natural wonders can be on the understated side. We love the silent protection of lush forests or soft waves crashing onto a rocky beach, but these cliffs are in a whole other category. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is a must-see if you're a nature-lover in the Great Lakes State.

There are several incredible hikes all starting from the same trailhead and parking lot.

The cliffs have beautifully colored stripes that were created when minerals and groundwater oozed out through the rocks over millions of years.

It can be difficult to see the full range of color while standing on the cliff so maybe check out a kayaking trip or a day cruise that takes you around the area.

If you want to see the cliffs on a sunny summer day, make sure to get to the lot before 10 a.m. The National Park Service says that the parking lot fills up very quickly during the warm months.

Pets aren't allowed on any of the trails.
