No matter what time of the year it is, North Carolina always has something fun to offer. Between all the beaches, the mountains and hidden trails, you know that you'll never be bored if you're visiting. One super cool fact about this state is that you can hike to the highest point east of the Mississippi and be one with the clouds.
Mount Mitchell is located in Burnsville, North Carolina and it sits at a tall 6,684 feet. This means you'll be so close to the clouds that you'll feel like you can reach your hand out and touch them. Not only is this just a mountain you can climb, but it's an entire state park that you can explore.
You can choose the way you want to get to the top, depending on your hiking experience. There are a few short paved walkways that will take you right to the summit, but there are a few other trails that will take you through the park's wooded forests.
Before you head up to the top, you should stop into the visiting center and museum that will tell you all about the history of the mountain. Fun Fact: Elisha Mitchell, the founder of this gigantic mountain, is actually buried at the summit.
You can park in the parking lot that is off of State Route 128 so your hike won't be too strenuous and you can get to the summit with no problem. From the parking lot, it is a quick walk up a paved sidewalk and you're there.
The Pisgah National Forest surrounds this state park and if you choose to take a more in-depth trail to get to the top, you'll get to experience the beauty of this forest. You can find all the different trails and difficulties on their website.
At the summit of Mount Mitchell, there is a large observation deck where you will get incredible views of the mountains and surrounding valley. The only downside is that it will be freezing since you are so high up in elevation. What happened to the saying warm air rises?
If you are looking for more adventures in North Carolina that have more of an adventurous hike, you should check out this spot that has a trail that leads to a 50-foot waterfall, or this trail that leads you to a 150-foot cascading waterfall.
