21 Things To Do This Summer Instead Of Falling In Love

It's pretty obvious, but a relationship takes time, energy, and a lot of sacrifice. And it seems as though it's not something we actually realize until we're in one and have to start cancelling plans with  friends to Netflix and chill with bae.

I am totally for compromise in a relationship, and think it's important to be able to make sacrifices for those you love, but I also look at all the single ladies out there who are rushing into relationships, desperate to fall back in love as soon as they can, and all I can think about is how much more they could be doing with the precious time they have. Totally not saying that all single ladies are like this, but it's defs not uncommon.

There is so much more to this world than just a significant other, all types of love that exist outside of a romantic relationship - having a passion for a hobby, loving your best friends, loving your neighbourhood by doing good deeds, and most importantly, loving and taking care of yourself.

It's time to think "ME" and for "ME", to be fulfilled as a person and to love one another before giving someone else a chance to fall in love the incredible person that you are.

Here are 21 things to do this summer instead of falling in love:

1. Learn a new language you've always wanted to learn.

You've always wanted to learn some French or maybe even Japanese, but you've always put it off because you never have time. Now that it's summer, you have all the time to yourself. Pick up a language you've always wanted to learn! Take an online course, and audio class or go on Craigslist and find a conversation tutor... anything to get you started.

2. Make yourself a "yes week".

When you're in a relationship, it seems as though you barely have enough time for anyone but you and your S/O. While you're single this summer, make a week for yourself where you say "yes" to everyone who extends you an invite to hang out and catch up. Even say "yes" to anyone who needs a hand, maybe they're moving out, help them with their furniture; maybe they're trying to get those summer gains, go workout with them.

3. Gift yourself with the best bod you've ever had.

Don't do it for anyone else but yourself! Get strong and look hot AF. Get into a new sport like ultimate frisbee or even spinning. Explore your options! Feel good from all the endorphins rushing through your body from the work outs and look good too.

4. Go to that music festival you've always wanted to go to.

No S/O? No problem. Festivals are most fun with the squad anyway. You finally don't have to spend money on anyone other than yourself, and we know how expensive music festivals can be, so go ahead and make that splurge!

5. Date like there's no tomorrow.

Get out there! Whether it's Tinder, Bumble, OkCupid or Plenty Of Fish, whatever your cup of tea is, have fun and meet people. It doesn't have to be serious. Learn about what you like in people and what you don't. Maybe even go on a double date with another single friend and just have fun.

6. Eat messy food without the fear of getting judged.

Eat all the ribs, all the chicken wings, all the messiest first-date-forbidden foods you can imagine. When you're just eating with friends, there's no shame in gettting BBQ sauce all over your gob. And with all this amazing self-development that's happening to you this summer, you deserve a messy treat.

7. Make a list of everything you want in your future S/O...

And become that list. Everything you've ever wanted in a partner in life should also be what you strive to embody yourself. Want a successful, career-driven, hard working mans in your life? Take the time to work on yourself and become that person, because at the end of the day, you're the only person who you're assured to spend the rest of your life with.

8. Take no shame in getting pampered up.

Don't get pampered for a man, get your nails done, hair done, everything done, for you! Dare to get stiletto gel nail extensions or even dye your hair unicorn colours. Spoil yourself, because why not?

9. Plan your dream vacation.

You've heard all the travel hipsters say "traveling is sooooo good for your soul". And tbh, they're not wrong. Open your mind to new cultures, immerse yourself in new experience and don't be afraid to meet new people. Travel with your best friends or even do it alone! You'll be surprised at how independent you actually are.

10. Learn to dance.

If you don't already know how to dance, take a dancing class or ask a friend who dances to teach you. There's nothing more cathartic than moving your body and expressing yourself, even if you're totally not hand/eye/feet coordinated. Let loose!

11. Take a class you've always wanted to take.

Cooking school? A marketing course? Coding classes? Piano lessons? Whatever it may be, learn something new and stay committed. It's easy to set goals for yourself, but staying accountable is the hard part. Take a class with peers to stay on track and also have plenty of fun while learning.

12. Test your limits and do something crazy.

Skydiving, parachuting, cliff jumping, zip-lining, you name it. Fill your summer with excitement and awesome stories to tell your future grandkids, and all your friends in boring relationships #jknotjk.

13. Go on a road trip with the squad.

How long do you think you can be couped up in a four-door sedan with your friends for? Test your friendships and go on a short road trip to a nearby town, or even really challenge your friends with a cross-Canada road trip.

14. Start a new TV series.

If you ever watched a series with a BF/GF at some point in your life, you know the struggle of having to wait for them to start the next episode, or having to lie about not watching the next episode and act all surprised at the plot twist. Start and finish a series by yourself without having to worry about anyone else. Netflix-binge with discretion though.

15. Sleep... lots.

This one might sound a but stupid, but you'd be surprised at how many people, including yourself, don't know how to truly rest. Take care of your body and balance out your stressful job and late nights out with ample rest. You're in your prime, and you want to make sure your body is health for the years passed your prime.

16. Do something you'll regret because... why not?

A little recklessness never hurt anyone. Sometimes you just have to let loose and indulge in yourself a little. Entertain all the ideas you've wanted to do but felt restricted to. Obviously we're not tell you to quit your day job or drop out of school to pursue a career in making bootleg fidget spinners, but just make little foolish decisions or drink a little too much on a night out with the girls.

Start a journal or a blog to self-reflect and track where you're at in life. Right down anything you have on your mind and make it a little therapy session for yourself. You can even start a photo journal for Instagram...and who knows...become Insta famous?
