7 Free Things To Do In Vancouver This Winter If You’re Broke

Living in Vancouver is expensive. From rent and bills to going out and doing what you love, it can cost a lot of money to live here. While most activities in this city do cost something, many are also completely free. We did a little digging around and found 7 free things to do in Vancouver this winter for when you're completely broke. 

There are tons of events going on every day of the week in Vancity. While it would be nice to hit them all up, you need to be selective when you’re on a budget. 

To take the strain off your bank account, we found awesome events that are going on in and around Vancouver this month totally for free. That's right. These events won’t cost you a penny so you can go to all of them without feeling guilty. 

Given the fact that it's almost the holiday season, a lot of events this time of year revolve around Christmas. But don’t worry, there are still some that don’t involve twinkling lights and Santa.

These events are bound to make your November the best yet. Now all you need to do is start filling your calendar.

7th Annual Christmas Tree Festival 

When: Saturday, November 23 to Saturday, January 4

Why You Need To Go: It’s time to celebrate Christmas so what better way than by checking out a festival? Head to the Port Coquitlam Museum and take in some serious holiday inspiration. You can even vote for your favourite tree.

Tree Lighting Festival 

When: Saturday, November 23

Address: Surrey Civic Plaza, University Dr., Surrey, BC

Why You Need To Go: Come watch a whopping 60-foot tree get lit up in Surrey. The tree lighting ceremony is free to attend, but if you have some change to spare, check out some of the many vendors and food trucks.


When: Saturday, November 30

Address: Yaletown, Vancouver, BC

Why You Need To Go: Yaletown will be transforming into its 8th annual free outdoor Christmas festival. From light displays and markets to food trucks and entertainment, this event makes it easy to waste away an afternoon totally for free.

Lights at Lafarge 

When: Saturday, November 30

Address: Lafarge Lake, Town Centre Park, Coquitlam, BC

Why You Need To Go: This free kickoff event will allow you to walk through a 1.2 km loop full of lights. When you're done getting the perfect Instagram, grab a cheap bite to eat at a food truck.

Vancouver Christmas Tree Lighting 

When: Friday, November 29

Address: Vancouver Art Gallery, 750 Hornby St., Vancouver, BC

Why You Need To Go: Celebrate 13 years of tree lighting at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Watch as the 76-foot tall tree is lit for the entire city. Afterwards, there will also be entertainment, hot chocolate and cookies so stay around and enjoy a little.

Winter Treasures 

When: Tuesday, November 12 to Thursday, December 18

Why You Need To Go: This 5th annual market is the place to hit up if you are looking for a Christmas gift, or just to window shop. Browsing holiday treasures is fun even if you don't buy anything.

Granville Island Public Market

Why You Need To Go: Walk around and take in everything a farmers' market has to offer. From produce and baked goods to home supplies, you can wander around for hours in the comfort and the warmth of the indoors. Plus, who doesn't love to people watch?
