9 Incredible Hikes For Every Level Of Fitness Around The Tri-Cities And Ridge Meadows

Presenting part 2 of the hikes for every level of fitness series. The outdoors are calling. You'll lose your breath (literally) over some of the incredible hikes we have here in BC. No matter your hiking expertise, there is something for everyone.

The Tri-Cities (Port Coquitlam, Port Moody, Coquitlam) and Ridge Meadows area is less than an hour drive from Vancouver, and many of the hikes are accessible by transit. There are plenty of hikes in the region, the majority short and easy ones. You can hike in the morning and still have time to go out at night.

Please be extremely careful, prepare accordingly, and follow trail etiquette at all times when hiking. All times and distances are round-trip. Here are 9 incredible hikes for every level of hiking experience for you to do:

Buntzen Lake // Port Moody

See the mountains, lake, and forest all in one easy hike. The Buntzen Lake Trail has views that are beautiful all year-round.After your walk you can enjoy a kayak ride around the calm lake, go for a swim, or relax on the beach area.

Distance: 8 km

Time: 1 - 3 hours

Elevation Gain: Minimal

Season: Year-round

Crystal Falls // Coquitlam

A short hour and easy hike later and you are at a scenic waterfall. The trail follows along the Coquitlam River before leading you to the clear, refreshing waters at Crystal Falls.

Distance: 7 km

Time: 1 hour

Elevation Gain: Minimal

Season: Year-round

Sasamat Lake // Port Moody

Sasamat Lake is great for hiking, picnics, beaching, and swimming.

The well maintained trail is perfect if you are looking for a quick hike. The trail surrounds the lake, rewarding hikers with different perspectives to view the shoreline.

Distance: 8 km

Time: 1 - 3 hours

Elevation Gain: 100 meters

Season: Year-round

Jug Island Beach // Belcarra

Jug Island is a small island off the tip of Belcarra Regional Park. Although the island itself is not accessible, you can still easily hike to the beach right across from it and admire cool views of Indian Arm. Some people also kayak around the island.

Distance: 5.5 km

Time: 1 - 2 hours

Elevation Gain: 100 meters

Sendero Diez Vistas // Port Moody

Why experience only one view when you can see ten? The hike's name is because originates from its ten beautiful views, overlooking the Indian Arm and the Buntzen Lake area.

Distance: 12 km

Time: 3 - 6 hours

Elevation Gain: 460 meters

Season: April - November

Coquitlam Crunch // Coquitlam

A moderately steeper urban trail with stairs, Coquitlam Crunch is great if you are looking to get a quick workout. If views of the city are what you prefer, you will enjoy the sights of Burnaby and SFU from this workout trail.

Distance: 4.5 km

Time: 0.5 - 1.5 hours

Elevation Gain: 244 meters

Season: Year-round

Swan Falls Viewpoint // Port Moody

Swan Falls Viewpoint offers a scenic view of Buntzen Lake and Swan Falls. The hike starts from the Buntzen Lake area.

Distance: 10 km

Time: 1.5 - 3 hours

Elevation Gain: 195 meters

Season: Year-round


Golden Ears // Maple Ridge

My personal pick, for those up for the challenge, Golden Ears offers incredible views at the top. Extremely well worth the long and steep hike. Many finish the hike in a day, and some choose to hike while camping.

Distance: 24 km

Time: 9 - 12 hours

Elevation Gain: 1500 meters

Season: July - September

Dilly Dally Loop // Port Moody

Ain't no time for dilly dallying on this hike. A lesser known trail around the Buntzen Lake area, Dilly Dally Loop is a challenging hike with spectacular scenery.The hike offers a variety of landscapes and incredible views and is for the more seasoned hiker.

Distance: 25 km

Time: 10 - 12 hours

Elevation Gain: 1142 meters

Season: July - October
