Japan is famous for having one-of-a-kind pod hotels. Now, it looks like Canada is following in their footsteps. A new pod hotel that is just like the ones in Japan is opening in Canada next month and you can even book a stay now. Panda Pod Hotel will be the second-ever pod hotel in the whole country and the first in Metro Vancouver, BC.

Panda Pod Hotel is opening near Vancouver in Richmond, BC next month in April. It will be a "capsule" style hotel and is modelled after other "pod hotels", a trend that first started in Tokyo. 

The hotel hopes to provide visitors to Vancouver with a unique yet affordable stay. "The modern and affordable hotel option is now available in Vancouver," says the Panda Pod Hotel on their website. "Enjoy a cozy stay at our pod accommodation, connect with worldwide travellers and the city within easy reach."

So how much does a stay at one of these small pod-hotels actually cost? Panda Pod Hotel is now offering beds starting at $49 a night for their opening promo, but currently, rates are normally around $53 on their website.

Every guest gets assigned to their own sleeping pod that is located in a shared space with other travellers. So what are the sleeping pods like? "Our pods are designed for maximum comfort! Built extra-spacious with noise-cancelling materials, each pod is equipped with a memory foam pillow and comfortable mattress," says the hotel on their website.

"They also have adjustable ventilation so you can control airflow." Every pod will also get its own folding table, clothing hooks, and a pull-down screen so that guests can sleep or relax with some privacy. 

"Capsule hotels are well-known establishments originated in Asia and have already gained grounds in dense to other cities like New York, London and Sydney, etc. Panda Pod is the first of its kind in Vancouver," said Sharon Cheung, Panda Pod Hotel general manager, in a news release, according to Tri-City News

"Throughout the past 10 years, the hotel daily average rates and occupancy rates have been on the (rise). We would like to offer a more economical accommodation alternative for the travellers with budget concern."

BC is also home to Canada's first ever pod hotel, the Pangea Pod Hotel in Whistler, which opened last year in 2018. So far, the hotel has been a huge hit and has rave reviews from guests. A stay at the Pangea Pod Hotel starts at around $70 a night, according to their website

Panda Pod Hotel will be located near No. 3 Road and Granville Avenue in Richmond, BC, around a 10-minute drive from the Vancouver International Airport and 30 minutes from downtown Vancouver.
