Canadian Childcare Worker Charged With Making Child Porn And Sexual Assault With A Weapon

BC childcare worker suspended from school after charges of making child pornography, sexual interference and sexual assault with a weapon.

On Thursday, March 14, an Ontario daycare worker was sentenced to nine years in prison for using toddlers that he was taking care of to make child pornography. Today, we learn that another Canadian childcare worker was just charged with making child pornography in Maple Ridge, British Columbia.

According to local police, Daniel Jon Olson, 52, was charged with one count of possessing child pornography, one count of making, printing, publishing or possessing child pornography for the purpose of publication, eight counts of sexual interference and two counts of sexual assault with a weapon.

The troubling charges are shocking but even more worrisome considering Olson had access to children through his profession. Olson worked as a child and youth care worker in the Maple Ridge school district where he interacted with children regularly.

Ridge Meadows RCMP announced Olson's charged on Thursday, March 14. In a formal statement, the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District confirmed that Olson did, in fact, work as a childcare worker in multiple elementary and secondary schools during his career.

The school district sent a statement to families asking them to send any information that they may have directly to Ridge Meadows RCMP. Another spokesperson stated that the school district would not be able to release a list of the schools that Olson had worked for because it would impede the ongoing investigation.

If this story wasn't already bad enough. A source told Global News that Olson was known to have a long history with foster care. According to them, he's been serving as a foster parent to children in BC for a long time. While this hasn't been confirmed by the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the allegations are troubling that Olson may have had access to children in his home in addition to at work.

Olson is set to appear in court on April 2, 2019.
