Canadian Teacher Won't Lose Job Despite Telling Student To "Go Kill Yourself"

A heated altercation took place at a high school in Canada and a teacher is facing the consequences. A BC teacher told a student to “go kill yourself" and he only faced a short 10-day suspension. Despite these harsh words, the teacher got to keep their job. Now, he will face another suspension later this month for a different incident.

According to a court document posted by News 1130 yesterday, Boris Pekarsky is a current high school music teacher in Delta, British Columbia. Back in November of 2016, Pekarsky was teaching a class when things got disruptive. 

The document states that Pekarsky yelled at a grade nine student who was not on task. When they moved, they accidentally tripped over a percussion instrument and caused a loud noise.

This is when Pekarsky told that student and another one to leave saying words to the effect of “go kill yourself, it won’t matter anyway.” Several students allegedly heard the teacher say the shocking words.

As a result, Pekarsky was suspended from his job without pay in January 2017, according to Global News. The 10-day suspension took place between March 13 to 24, 2017. 

A second inappropriate incident took place with the teacher in January 2017. In this instance, Pekarsky met with a small group of students from the grade nine band class.

In the meeting, Pekarsky told the students that he did not know what to do about the behaviour of a few students in the class who were acting out. He singled out specific students by using their name and asked the group for advice on how to a dress the matter. 

Pekarsky admitted that his conduct was unprofessional and agreed to a three-day suspension of his Independent School Teaching Certificate. The second suspension will be served this month between June 25 to 27, 2019.

In the ruling, the commission wrote that Pekarsky did not treat his students with respect and failed to acknowledge how his words would impact the kids.

He was also accused of creating an unhealthy dynamic in the classroom and “undermined a respectful and inclusive learning environment.”
