Whistler Blackcomb, the ski resort at Whistler, is bringing affordable housing to the town with their new proposed staff quarters called "Glacier 8". They have plans for dorm-style housing with 200 beds right in Whistler. According to CBC News, rent is set to be lower than $400 a month.
Pete Sonntag, the chief operating officer at Whistler Blackcomb, said, according to CBC News, "Affordable housing is an issue that's been increasing in importance over the past few years ... the need is critical and it's critical across the community". He also emphasized the big price difference between the rent they would be offering and the current rent prices out there.
This facility would be for both first-season staff and seasonal-returning staff, according to CBC News. This housing project will be proposed to city council in the new year.
The Whistler municipal government is also planning to bring more housing to the town by adding 1,000 new beds in town in the next five years.
