Winter has finally decided to hit Vancouver, and it is coming at us hard. What was a mild winter season has turned into a chaotic, snowy mess. Several parts of Vancouver have shut down today on Tuesday, February 12 during the snow storm. Many schools, universities, attractions and more are completely closed. Check out the complete list of today's closures and cancellations across Metro Vancouver

Environment Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Vancouver today. The agency is forecasting long periods of snow and 15 to 25 cm of snowfall in the city. They are now warning locals to be careful during their commutes and on the roads.

"Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions," reads the weather alert from Environment Canada. "Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow."

There has been much more snow than usual in Vancouver – in fact, this is the most snow and coldest weather the city has seen in over 10 years. So, many schools, universities, attractions and more have gone into shutdown mode today in the midst of the snow storm.

"Tuesday Feb. 12 day classes at UBC Point Grey are cancelled due to expected commute conditions. This affects classes starting at 8 a.m. and ending at 6:30 p.m. A decision on evening classes is pending.

Please note the campus is NOT closed. Essential staff are expected to come to work. Non-essential staff are expected to come to work unless they’ve spoken with, or received direction from, their manager and made alternative arrangements." - UBC


All SFU campuses are closed. "SFU’s Burnaby, Surrey and Vancouver campus are closed today February 12 due to weather conditions. Campus buildings remain open on all SFU campuses, but all classes, exams, university services and campus activities are cancelled for the entire day. The Burnaby campus library building is closed for the day." - SFU

Capilano University

Both Capilano University campuses are closed today because of the weather and road conditions. 

Langara College

The entire Langara College campus is closed today and all classes, both regular studies and Continuing Studies, are canceled.


"Due to winter conditions across the Lower Mainland, all BCIT campuses are CLOSED today, February 12. All classes are cancelled and all BCIT buildings and services are closed." - BCIT

Kwantlen Polytechnic University

"All KPU campuses are closed due to severe weather, poor travel conditions, and Environment Canada snowfall warning." - Kwantlen Polytechnic University

Douglas College

All campuses are closed today.

Vancouver Premier College

The campus is closed today.

Vancouver Community College

All VCC campuses are closed today.

Emily Carr University

The entire university is closed today and all classes are cancelled. Please note there is no access to campus.

Vancouver International Airport

The YVR airport has cancelled several flights and many more are delayed. The airport is reminding travelers to make sure to check their flight status before they head to the airport and to give extra time to your commute. They also tweeted this morning that crews are ready to help travellers get on their way safely.

There are several transit delays and cancellations in several regions that Translink operates. The transit company has warned commuters to expect service delays and disruptions today. Yesterday, there were massive lineups and delays on the Expo Line.

Translink also announced in a tweet that the Expo and Millennium Lines are running but will have less frequent service. They told commuters to be "prepared for longer waits and more crowded trains and platforms".

Vancouver Seawall

The #StanleyPark seawall is closed between Siwash Rock and Lions Gate Bridge due to the risk of ice breaking off the rock face onto the path. We are monitoring the situation and will provide an update when it reopens.

According to Environment Canada, the snow is expected to let up later this afternoon. However, it is predicted to make a comeback again later this week, and snow flurries are in the forecast for Thursday, February 14 and Friday.
