This Canadian Teacher Asked Their Students To Classify Racists In This One Assignment And The Story Is Wild

An assignment in a Canadian public high school has sparked outrage among many parents. Students at Valleyview Secondary School in Kamloops, B.C., were given an assignment that showed different opinions. They were then asked to classify them based on political views and as either left-wing or right-wing, which pigeonholes and generalizes people into two categories and solely based on their political beliefs.

There were several problematic questions that caused major backlash. For instance, the assignment asked students to classify whether racists were "left" or "right", and the teacher wrote that the correct answer was "right".

There were other controversial classifications such as "A person who believes that women should stay home and be mothers", "A person who believes that Canada should restrict immigration" and "A person who believes that Canada should send aid to Third World Countries". This assignment and classification upset several parents, and resulted in one father, Matt DeFouw, sharing the assignment on social media. The Facebook post has since went viral, getting over 2000 shares and almost 500 comments since it was posted. 

"This is 1984-esque propaganda at its very worst," wrote Matt DeFouw, the father of a teen in the class, on the Facebook post, "On this single page, there is more bigotry, divisive evil, lies, and malice than I could even imagine as a conspiracy theory or piece of political satire."

School district officials are now investigating the assignment, according to CTV News.
