Vancouver has its fair share of great East-Asian restaurants, and every Vancouverite has a recommendation or two up their sleeve. But there’s something especially appealing about Commercial Drive’s Kin Kao, an unpretentious nook that mixes a laid-back East Van aesthetic with a traditional and fresh menu.
Kin Kao’s head chef, Tang Phoonchai, a Bangkok native, hand-selects daily local ingredients which he pairs with spices imported directly from Thailand. The result is a concise but reliable menu of refined lunch and dinner options, offering both light but satisfying starters such as papaya salad and crispy pork buns, and larger mains including a selection of curries, marinated meats, and stir-fries. Particularly delicious items include the Panaeng Chicken Curry and Phat Thai with Prawns.
The small 25-seat space mirrors the menu’s simplicity: the L-shaped room has light wooden tables which stand out against its bright blue accents and counter. The bar menu itself attracts craft beer enthusiasts, with a rotating selection of Vancouver’s best offerings.
The perfect place for a lunch date or a larger outing with friends, Kin Kao will undoubtedly satiate both your modern Thai and craft beer cravings.
