Vancouver Universities Are Open During Next Week's Climate Strike & Students Are Furious

In case you didn't already know, there is a Global Climate Strike taking place from September 20 to 27, 2019. The strike will span across countless locations around the world. Each participating city's strike is happening on a specific day and time throughout the week. The Vancouver Climate Strike will be on September 27 at 1 p.m. local time. Some Canadian universities have canceled classes during the strike to show support. As of now, Vancouver's schools have not joined the cause and it has not gone unnoticed. Students are taking to the internet to express their disappointment in their schools.

The Global Climate Strike will prompt millions of people worldwide to walk out of their workplaces, schools, and homes to join other climate activists on the streets to “demand the end of the age of fossil fuels,” says the Global Climate Strike website.

Vancouver’s strikers will congregate at City Hall, 453 West 12th. As some Canadian universities announce class cancelations to honour the strike, Vancouver’s post-secondary institutions are not yet among those to cancel.

Students of the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, and other B.C. schools are beginning to speak up. Though some faculties have opted to cancel classes at UBC, the university as a whole plans to remain open, according to CBC News.

One UBC professor tweeted that, though he's not scheduled to teach that day, he plans to teach topics surrounding climate policy and politics that week to support the Global Climate Strike.

Others tweeted, attaching Concordia's notice of closure and looking to Vancouver universities to follow by example.

Others simply want to remind the institutions of what an impact they really have.

Some individuals are expressing disappointment in the universities, but being sure to express gratitude to the faculties that have canceled classes for the strike.

With the Global Climate Strike coming in hot (no pun intended), people are curious if Vancouver's universities will have a change of heart.

On top of the strike, some young people are vowing not to have children until the issues are addressed. It's clear that this is a cause that today's youth are ready to get behind. We're curious to see what will unfold on Sept. 27 at City Hall. Stay tuned.
