Another anti-Asian hate crime has just been reported in Vancouver. On Tuesday, May 19, online photos surfaced depicting statues in Vancouver's Chinatown that had been defaced with racist graffiti. Now Vancouver Police are investigating the matter.

On Twitter, an account named Chinatown Today posted a photo of a lion statue which is part of the Millenium Gate entranceway.

On the statue, you can see that graffiti reading "Goof" has been marked on the lion's forehead.

Below, near the mouth, words reading, "COVID In China" have been written in red as well.

In response to the Twitter post, a user named Sarah Ling also posted a photo confirming the graffiti. She wrote that both lions were defaced as part of this graffiti act.

The photo she posted of the second lion had "Covid-19" written on the lion's forehead. And just below the lips, the word "China" was scribbled as well.

Dots of red are seen lining the lion statue's lips and mouth. Ling put the hashtags "Chinatownyvr" and "racism" on the photo.

In an email sent to Narcity, the Vancouver Police Department confirmed that they are aware of "racist and hateful graffiti" shown in the pictures.

They're asking the public to come forward with information so they can continue their investigations.

This is hardly the first incident aimed against the Asian community in Vancouver.

In fact, anti-Asian hate crimes have been on the rise in the city

VPD told Narcity that anyone who is a victim of these hate crimes or is a witness to a hate crime should contact the police immediately. "The VPD take all of these incidents very seriously," they said.

On May 1, Vancouver Police went on the hunt for a suspect who allegedly defaced several large windows with racist graffiti at the Chinese Cultural Centre, as explained in a statement.

At the time, Constable Tania Visintin of the department said, "It’s disheartening to report that these types of crimes are ongoing during the pandemic."

In April, Vancouver Police received 15 reports of hate-motivated incidents that took place in the city. 11 of those had an "anti-Asian" element, according to the statement.

Altogether, 20 anti-Asian hate crimes were reported to police this year alone. A considerable increase from last year's 12 throughout 2019.
