If you’ve ever been in a car trying to go anywhere on a long weekend, you’ve probably experienced some traffic-related nightmares. Unfortunately, this long weekend will be no different. Albertans, if you’re planning on hopping in a vehicle for a weekend getaway, you may what to reconsider. Western Alberta road closures will cause terrible traffic this long weekend.
Calgary and everywhere west of the city are predicted to be utter mayhem over the long weekend. Serious congestion is also expected, and already happening, in various tourist hot-spots. So, be aware out there. First, let’s talk about Calgary.
According to Global News, Calgarians can expect road closures all over the city, some of which on major roads. Apparently, this long weekend is when The City of Calgary has opted to tackle some road work, paving, and construction projects that they’ve been meaning to get to. On top of that, other areas will be affected because of special events.
There will be countless lane closures for various reasons over the weekend, most of which taking place all day. You can expect delays and detours on Crowchild Trail, Glenmore Trail, 14 Street S.W., Memorial Drive N.E., Macleod Trail, 77 Street S.W., 11 Avenue S.W., 162 Avenue S.E., and more.
The long weekend festivities in Calgary will be impacting traffic, as well. The events to look out for include Chasing Summer at the Max Bell Centre, Inglewood Sunfest in Inglewood, Tour De Bowness Hill Climb on Mackay Road N.W., and Bow Cycle Tour de Bowness and Street Festival. Each of these events will result in road closures, detours, and delays.
Calgary, you might be thinking you’d like to get the heck out of town after hearing all this news. Well, heading west might not be the answer. CBC News explains that the Rockies are looking grim when it comes to the roads.
Banff Ave is already experiencing bumper-to-bumper traffic in parts. Global News encourages visitors to try to get in and park early, but we think that ship has probably sailed. According to Global News, parks officials are predicting complete madness at hot spots like Johnston Canyon and Moraine Lake. These locations were already experiencing closures last week due to congestion.
Basically, Calgary and everything west of Calgary is not looking good for road-trippers. Perhaps this weekend is your opportunity to take the road less traveled? Maybe check out the Prairies? If you need to be in Calgary or the Rockies, taking public transit, biking, or walking might be the right call for you.
Stay safe and try to stay zen behind the wheel if you get caught in traffic. We know, it can be difficult sometimes.
