What Is The “Instagram Egg” And Why Is Everyone Talking About It

Well, guys, 14 days into 2019 and already it's been the most wild year in a very long time. Case in point? Kylie Jenner's Instagram record for most-liked picture was just beat out by an egg.
If you're confused about how a basic photo of a brown egg, posted to Instagram on January 4, surpassed a photo of an actual human being with her actual human baby... well, yeah. I think it's safe to say we're all a little bit confused over here.
The egg also beat out Justin Bieber's engagement photo to Hailey Baldwin, Beyonce's pregnancy announcement (!!!), and Kim Kardashian's wedding photo with Kanye. All iconic shots... but not as iconic as one brown egg, apparently. In fact, if you want to get technical, a picture of an egg beat out every single Instagram photo, including any and all photos from that dog account you're probably following. Sorry.
The picture, posted by Instagram account EGG GANG (@world_record_egg), has over 28 million likes right now. Which means that as of now, it beat out Kylie's photo by about 10 million likes and counting - but, you know. A for effort, Kylie. But, to be fair, @world_record_egg currently has about 3 million followers, which pales in comparison to Kylie's 123 million followers. So... A for effort, egg?

Admitedly, the egg didn't get all those likes out of the goodness of people's hearts, like Kylie's did. Instead, the egg had to resort to asking people to like its photo in the caption, which as we all know is probably the biggest social media faux-pas but also it's an egg so I'll allow it.

And just in case you're wondering if the egg is simply just a social commentary on the futility of Instagram fame, rest assured that people... actually love this freaking egg:
Ah! The egg. So proud of her.
We are all the egg

In all honesty, people seem to be loving this egg. And really, can you blame them? The fact that one single egg could cause this much social media disruption deserves a little bit of recognition, I feel.
Anyway, if this is a preview of how the rest of 2019 will go, I'm so here for it.
