You Can Now Swim In The World’s First Underwater Museum In Europe

Located off the coast of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean is Museo Atlantico, Europe’s first underwater museum. Unlike a regular museum, all the sculptures at Museo Atlantico are 50 feet below water, which you can explore by scuba diving. The swim down will be well worth it, as it is unlike anything you've seen before!

There is plenty to see in Museo Atlantico. There are 300 life-size sculptures on display! All of the artwork is by British artist Jason deCaires Taylor who is famous for his underwater art. The largest artwork consists of 200 people arranged in a circle.

The sculptures address a variety of issues such as immigration, social media and global warming, and were designed to improve environmental awareness while promoting the opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty found in the ocean.

To see the museum you will need to book a diving tour, and there are some from Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Fuerteventura. Each provides you roundtrip transfer from your hotel, transportation via boat to the dive site, and full diving equipment for €61 euro or approximately $92 CAD. For an extra €20 (approximately $30 CAD) they will provide you with a waterproof camera to use on the dive, and will give you a copy of your photos.
