We all know about hot spots like Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper – they're what help make Alberta a go-to destination. Fair enough, since they're home to some of the most spectacular scenery in Canada and within driving distance of a major city. There's a lot out there to see in the province though, and no shortage of stunning Calgary day trip options.
From swimming holes that feel like hidden gems to a low-key town tucked away in a national park, summer trips here are unbeatable. If you've done the classics and are looking for more adventure in the warmer months, head to these six spots, all less than three hours away from Calgary.
Waterton Lakes National Park
If you want some seriously breathtaking scenery without the crowds of the usual mountain town destinations, go to the little village in this national park.
The park is massive, so you get everything from sprawling grassland and canyons to towering mountains. The wide lake here is a main draw, with hiking trails that look out onto it and local rental spots where you can get kayaks to tour around it.
The small community here is low-key but has everything you need. Accommodations, restaurants, and tours are all here, making it an easy getaway spot. It's also a Dark Sky Preserve so if you want to do some camping this summer, there's no better place. You can fall asleep under the incredible blanket of stars here, making it an unforgettable experience.
This place is just two and a half hours from Calgary, so you can either leave early and spend the day exploring, or opt for a weekend getaway here.
Quarry Lake
If you want a quick escape from the city this glistening lake is just a over an hour's drive away. On a hot summers day you can hop in the car and head to the lake for a cool down – and of course, some incredible views.
The clear blue waters of this lake make it especially beautiful, and it's surrounded by mountains and thick forest. Lots of people also take paddle boards to this lake so you can enjoy it for longer, and take in the iconic Ricky Mountain scenery.
The lake is also near the town of Canmore, which is a beautiful mountain retreat that's slightly less crowded than the nearby Banff. It's a great option for if you want to stay in the area and explore longer – which you definitely will once you go.
Lundbreck Falls
This stunning waterfall has two cascades side-by-side, creating a "mini Niagara Falls" vibe. It's two hours away from Calgary and you can sit and watch the booming falls drop down from 12-metres high into the limestone canyon.
There's an observation deck or you can walk down into the canyon and feel the misty air of the waterfall.
Drumheller
Just an hour and a half from Calgary is the "Dinosaur Capital of the World." It's a small town with stunning scenery, dino-themed everything, and a ton to do and see. The town even has a giant T-Rex that you can climb up into.
The Royal Tyrrell Museum is where you'll see the unique fossil collection and learn more about the dinosaurs that once roamed the area. Then you have the surrounding scenery that you can explore on the trails. Horseshoe Canyon and Horsethief Canyon are beautiful spots here, and the famous hoodoos are just 15 minutes from the town.
Dinosaur Provincial Park is around an hour and a half from Drumheller if you want to keep the getaway Jurassic-themed.
Lethbridge
Just two hours away from Calgary is this smaller city, which offers a change of pace and different scenery. If you don't want to just explore the great outdoors on a day trip this is a great way to still have lots to do. You can spend your day wandering the cute downtown area with its shops, local eats and charming streets.
If you want to stay a little longer Lethbridge is also a great base for exploring. It prides itself on being a short distance away from four UNESCO World Heritage Sites — Writing-on-Stone Provincial Park, Waterton Glacier International Peace Park, Dinosaur Provincial Park, Head-Smashed-in Buffalo Jump/Estipah-skikikini-kots.

Kananaskis Nordic Spa
Exploring can get somewhat exhausting, so this one is the day trip that will leave you feeling rejuvenated in every way. It's just an hour's drive from Calgary so easy to get to, but you'll feel like you're a world away.
The Nordic spa has hot and cold pools that you can wander between, and steam rooms and saunas – set in the peaceful nature around the spa. You can wind down here, disconnect, and breathe in the fresh air.
Their Hydrotherapy cycle will have you driving home relaxed at the end of a day here. If you really want to feel pampered then you can also book a massage at the spa.
