The Greater Victoria area felt shaking, as a 3.8-magnitude earthquake struck in the evening on Thursday, February 13.
It hit around 10 p.m., about 17 kilometres from Victoria, had a depth of 40 kilometres and was "lightly felt in Victoria, Sidney and across southern Vancouver Island," according to Earthquakes Canada.
No damage has been reported, and there are no injuries expected from the earthquake. Some people took to social media, saying they felt the tremor.
One X user wrote "earthquake just now just off the coast of Victoria, BC. Felt that one for sure." Another person said that they "heard a rumble sound" around on Thursday night and "wondered if it was this earthquake" in Victoria.
Emergency Info BC reported the earthquake and said "there are no reports of damage or injury & none are expected. If you feel shaking: Drop, Cover & Hold On."
The BC government website has more information on how to prepare for an earthquake and what to do in the event of one. The government advises people to "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" at the first sign of an earthquake and to count to 60 seconds after the shaking stops before getting up. You should also be aware of potential aftershocks.
There are also steps on the government website for preparing your home, making an emergency plan, and packing grab-and-go bags.
