These tiny islands with crystal water were shouted out as where to go instead of Whistler
If you're planning a trip out West but want to skip out on some of the most popular tourist hot spots, then we've got you covered.
We turned to the Narcity audience to find where to go in B.C., instead of Whistler.
While the small mountain town outside of Vancouver is a go-to destination for a reason (stunning views, quaint streets, and bustling vibes), it can get seriously crowded and come with a hefty price tag to match. There are lots of B.C. destinations out there that will give you all the beauty, with fewer people all huddled up at the popular photo spots.
One of the most dreamy of them all? The Gulf Islands.
These tiny islands that are scattered around the Salish Sea, set in between Vancouver Island and the mainland, are full of incredible nature, creative communities, and adventure.
They were shouted out in the poll as one of the best spots to go instead of Whistler, and they definitely offer a different kind of experience. Turquoise water, stunning beaches, sparkling views, and local farms await you on these islands.
Many of them are connected by BC Ferries, making it pretty easy to explore them.
One of the most popular of the islands is Salt Spring, known for it's charming farm stands peppering the roadside, scenic vineyards and farmland alongside sparkling water, and the small town of Ganges. It makes for a quick trip with lots to do, being just an hour and a half ferry ride from Tsawwassen, or 35 minutes from Victoria's Swartz Bay.
While there are 200 Gulf Islands, not all of them are easy to reach from the city. From Vancouver the Southern Gulf Islands are good day trip options though, each with its own kind of charm, but all sharing a serene peacefulness.
Enjoy the remote nature and ocean views of Saturna Island, the picturesque coves and cute cafes of Pender, or whale watch on Galiano.
The adventures don't end at the Southern Gulf Islands though.
Hornby Island is most well-known for its crystal-clear water, tropical-like temperatures, and white sand beaches. You'll want to visit Little Tribune Bay when there to see all that, but don't miss out on the local food scene and breathtaking hiking trails on the island.
Gabriola Island is where you'll find the picturesque sandstone bluffs that it's famous for, as well as a lively community. This island is just a 20-minute ferry from Nanaimo.
Summer is the ideal time to explore these sunny islands, so skip other tourist spots in the province and hop on BC Ferries — it's island time.
