5 New Canadian Coins That You Could Find In Your Change In 2024 — Including A Green Toonie
Millions of Canadian coins have been put into circulation by the Royal Canadian Mint recently which means you might be able to find a few in your change.
That includes a black toonie and a green toonie featuring splashes of red, orange, white and black!
Not only do these new coins have unique designs unlike any others in Canada but they're all colourful too.
So, here are some of the loonies and toonies put into circulation in 2023 and 2022 that you could still find in your change this year.
Black toonie
The Royal Canadian Mint issued a new $2 coin to honour Queen Elizabeth II and her 70-year reign as monarch in December 2022.
While the new toonie has all the classic design elements of a standard $2 coin like the queen's effigy and the gold core, it features a black outer ring.
It's meant to be reminiscent of a mourning armband, marking her death on September 8, 2022.
Almost five million black toonies were minted and gradually went into circulation at the end of 2022 as banks restocked their $2 coin inventories.
Camo loonie
The Royal Canadian Mint released a new $1 coin to honour Elsie MacGill, "who broke barriers as an engineer and leading advocate of women's rights."
She played a key role in the production of Hawker Hurricanes — fighter planes that were used during WWII by the Allied forces — which earned her the nickname "Queen of the Hurricanes."
The plane on the loonie is coloured with green and brown hues, representing military camo, and has blue and red accents.
Back in August 2023, two million of these hued new coins were minted and one million classic gold-coloured loonies were minted.
Blue loonie
A new loonie commemorating Alexander Graham Bell — the inventor of the telephone — was minted back in October 2022.
It features a portrait of Bell and two of his inventions: the HD-4 Hydrofoil and the Silver Dart.
There is also an engraving of his signature and "175 YEARS" which is a reference to the 175th anniversary of his birth in 2022.
This colourful $1 coin has streaks of blue beside Bell.
The Royal Canadian Mint released three million coins honouring the inventor and two million of those feature the blue "colour enhancement."
Orange and blue toonie
The Royal Canadian Mint released a $2 coin honouring artist Jean-Paul Riopelle and marking the 100th anniversary of his birth in October 2023.
Not only is the toonie colourful but it's also art — literally!
The artwork appearing on the new $2 coin features part of Riopelle's acrylic and spray paint piece from 1992: L'Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg.
It also has the original colours — orange, blue, brown and white — of Riopelle's artwork.
Three million coins have been minted and two million of those toonies will have orange, blue, brown and white hues in the artwork.
Green toonie
There was a new toonie for National Indigenous Peoples Day put into circulation in 2023 that honours the "rich and diverse cultural heritages" of First Nations, Inuit and Métis people.
It features three unique and colourful designs, each representing First Nations, Inuit and Métis people and communities.
All three designs include splashes of red, orange, white and black and the inner core of the toonie is coloured green instead of gold.
The Royal Canadian Mint issued three million new coins, including two million with the green, red, orange, white and black colours.
One million coins with the National Indigenous Peoples Day design were minted in the toonie's classic silver and gold colours.
