Canada's Millennials Just Pushed The Baby Boomers Aside & Here's Which Gen You Belong To
Statistics Canada says there are more millennials than baby boomers, marking a first in the country in 65 years.
In a report released on Tuesday, the federal agency noted the baby boomer generation became the largest in the population in 1958 and continued to stay that way, until now.
According to Statistics Canada, millennials officially outnumbered baby boomers in Canada as of July 1, 2023.
The average age of the Canadian population fell from July 1, 2022, to July 1, 2023, for the first time since 1958.
However, the agency adds that the number and proportion of people 65 years old and older have continued to go up.
The federal agency says from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s, baby boomers made up about 40% of Canada's population. The "demographic weight" of millennials will never reach the level of baby boomers and Statistics Canada says it will peak at its current level of 23%.
The agency adds the country's population is aging and a reason for the decline of baby boomers, but the increase of millennials is also due to an increase of permanent and temporary immigrants.
In its report, Statistics Canada also highlights that millennials are not the only generation to have increased their "demographic weight" from July 1, 2022, to July 1, 2023. Generation Z has also gone up and is now the third-largest generation in the country, exceeding Gen X.
It looks like millennials won't be the top generation for too long.
Statistics Canada says that based on the "latest population projections," Gen Z could "overtake millennials" in numbers by 2038.
