Two Americans have been charged with multiple offences in connection with a "significant firearms seizure" at the Coutts border crossing in southern Alberta.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Canadian Border Services Agency said the firearms had been found when the pair from the U.S. tried to enter Canada in their motorhome.

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has announced the province would be launching a legal challenge against the federal government’s "unjustified use of the Emergencies Act."

In a video, Kenney dismissed Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to invoke the act as an "unnecessary and disproportionate measure" that can "violate civil liberties, invades provincial jurisdiction and creates a very dangerous precedent for the future."

Alberta RCMP have arrested and detained 11 people at the Coutts border crossing after receiving information that the group had access to "a cache of firearms with a large quantity of ammunition."

An "immediate and complex" investigation was launched into the group, who reportedly had a "willingness to use force against the police if any attempts were made to disrupt the blockade," RCMP said.
