A new report looking into Canada's emergency COVID-19 benefits has found that the government paid out around $4.6 billion to people who were not eligible to receive the money.

The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has confirmed that it will be contacting Canadians about CERB and CRB repayments "to ensure that those who received COVID-19 individual benefits were eligible for them."

Starting Wednesday, May 11, the federal government will be sending "Notices of Redetermination" to Canadians who incorrectly received COVID-19 emergency benefits and may have to return the money.

The Canada Revenue Agency is getting in touch with "thousands" more Canadians to verify their eligibility for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit and warn them about possible CERB repayments.

In a statement shared with Narcity on January 27, a spokesperson confirmed that letters have been sent to people who may have claimed the benefit in 2020 without actually being eligible.
